"At Brouwerij Noordt we do a lot of collaboration brews with Dutch brewers."
Brouwerij Noordt, a hidden gem in Rotterdam
Behind some housing blocks in one of the older parts of Rotterdam we discovered a true hidden gem. The stunning location of young and ambitious Brouwerij Noordt is an old, converted fire station. They launched a grand approach in 2015 and started brewing their beers with not exactly the smallest brewing installation. The building itself offers more space than is being used right now, so there even is room for expansion.
From bartending to starting a Rotterdam brewery
After years of experience in the Rotterdam hospitality industry, working long days and nights behind the tap, Peter Rouwen was in for a change. A visit to Brooklyn Brewery in New York inspired him so much that he decided to change course and started studying brewing technology in Ghent, Belgium. Around the same time he found an investor and when the fire station came onto the market, a new Rotterdam brewery was born.
Brouwerij Noordt brewery installation
Peter likes to do things in his own way and designed the brewery installation himself. He had to fly back and forth to China a few times, but the result is a dream come true. Six fermentation tanks can produce 2000 litres per brew and another four large ones can produce 4000 litres.
Experimental brews are done in five smaller 200 litre vessels. The brewery also has a taproom with a choice of twenty different beers. Choose a flight of five beers in 15 cl glasses and you get the idea of the kind of beers they produce here at Brouwerij Noordt.
Oude Noorden, historic neighbourhood
This area in the northern part of Rotterdam is a historic and upcoming neighbourhood. The former working-class district has gone through quite a transformation. During World War II Rotterdam was virtually bombed flat so it’s rather unique that this area still has prewar premises and some recently renovated historic facades.
Take a stroll around the block and visit some of the galleries or little boutique shops. We suggest you grab a bite at one of the many restaurants, café’s and lunchrooms before heading straight over to the taproom of Brouwerij Noordt. No doubt this place deserves to be on the list of best craft beer bars in Rotterdam!
Not satisfied yet? You might consider paying a visit to one of the beer bars nearby or head on to another great beery venue just a little south of the city centre of Rotterdam, Kaapse Brouwers. Cheers!
