Wijngaard Saalhof

The Netherlands

"When the vines came in, some people said: What on earth is he doing?"

Wijngaard (Vineyard) Saalhof is located in the northwestern part of the Netherlands, in the old village of Wognum that dates back to around 900. The history of the farm that was located here also goes back centuries. In 2006 the first vines were planted and today red, white and cremant wines are produced here.

Owner Siem Loos used to have a thriving paint and finishing business with a lot of employees before he decided to make the switch to become a winemaker. A far cry from what he used to do!

Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen

Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen

The foundations of the château of Genoels-Elderen, in the Belgium province of Limburg, date back to Roman times. The Romans knew already that the conditions for winemaking were really good in this area because the property used to have 25 hectares of vineyards back then. In 1990 it was this winery that started the renaissance of winemaking in Belgium by planting the first vines again. What started merely as a hobby turned into an impressive winery.
