Wijngaard Aan de Breede Beek

The Netherlands

"Typical of the Netherlands is of course the weather. That is actually the main problem…"

Wijngaard (Vineyard) Aan de Breede Beek is situated on Slichtenhorst estate in the middle of The Netherlands. Winemaker Henk Breugem planted in 2003 the first acres with hybrid type grape varieties, cultivated at Geisenheim Agricultural University in Germany. These are all varieties with increased resistance to downy mildew that make it possible to grow grapes sustainably in the Dutch climate and achieve a good wine.

Although the son of a horticulturist, Henk worked in mental health for 20 years. At a certain point he decided to address his agrarian roots again and chose to set up this company. Now he works part-time in both the vineyard and also in mental health as an alternating combination.

Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen

Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen

The foundations of the château of Genoels-Elderen, in the Belgium province of Limburg, date back to Roman times. The Romans knew already that the conditions for winemaking were really good in this area because the property used to have 25 hectares of vineyards back then. In 1990 it was this winery that started the renaissance of winemaking in Belgium by planting the first vines again. What started merely as a hobby turned into an impressive winery.
