Domein De Wijngaardsberg

The Netherlands

"We're in the hottest spot in the Netherlands here..."

Winemaking in The Netherlands, some new and foolish idea? Be surprised... the oldest evidence of winemaking in The Netherlands can be found in the southern province of Limburg. On the current location of Domain De Wijngaardberg vines were planted as early as in 968! The vineyards disappeared around 1800, but in 2002 a new start was made.

Passionate winemaker Jules Nijst now makes Burgundy-style wines from classic grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Auxerrois. After all, the climate in Burgundy around 1970 was close to what it is right now in the south of Limburg...

Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen

The foundations of the château of Genoels-Elderen, in the Belgium province of Limburg, date back to Roman times. The Romans knew already that the conditions for winemaking were really good in this area because the property used to have 25 hectares of vineyards back then. In 1990 it was this winery that started the renaissance of winemaking in Belgium by planting the first vines again. What started merely as a hobby turned into an impressive winery.
