Uiltje Brewing Company

The Netherlands

"Instead of subtle nuances: “Boom, in your face!”"

Problem solved

A couple of years ago it was still hard to get your hands on Pale Ale’s, IPA’s or Imperial Stouts in the Netherlands, so Robbert Uyleman decided to take matters into his own hands. In 2012 he started contract brewing and three years later he opened his own craft brewery in Haarlem: Uiltje Brewing Company was born. Because he worked for some time at another local brewery, Brouwerij Jopen, he was already familiar with production brewing. That helped to realize exactly the brewery he had in mind.

Strong stuff

Ninety procent of the beers produced at Uiltje Brewing Company are barrel aged Porters, Stouts, Barley wines, and Imperial Red Ales. Heavier, stronger beers, that tend to go well on the whisky, bourbon, rum, wine, calvados and cognac casks that are resting in the barrel room. These guys are not afraid to experiment. They love to be creative and put the craziest stuff that you can imagine in your beer. Not in small amounts of buckets, but think wheelbarrows! But in the end all the creations they produce are, most importantly of all, good in quality.

Taproom and bar

Right next to the brewery you can enjoy twelve beers on draft and yes… also including two cask beers! If weather conditions permit, enjoy some good pizza (from experience) with your favorite beer outside on the terrace. In the taproom there’s also a nice whisky collection and we even noticed wine. Your favorite beer not available on draft? Hit the bottleshop with all the beers Uiltje Brewing Company ever brewed. In the medieval city center of Haarlem there is also Uiltje Bar with over thirty beers on draft and an impressive collection of bottles to choose from. A little beer paradise of 120 square meters.

Haarlem

Before you indulge yourself with beers in Uiltje Bar you might want to have a look around in Haarlem. It is located only 15 minutes from Amsterdam or Schiphol Airport, so we don’t see a reason why you shouldn’t. Have a break from the tourist-trodden paths of Amsterdam and enjoy the historic buildings, the narrow streets and the canals. Haarlem is also home to the Jopen Brewery, a couple of great museums, but also lots of nice little boutique shops and a wide variety of culinary enjoyment.

Brouwerij Poesiat & Kater

Brouwerij Poesiat & Kater

We love a good story and this is definitely one of those! This all begins in 1733 when Brouwerij De Gekroonde Valk (The Crowned Falcon) was founded in Amsterdam. In 1791 the brewery had a name change and was named Van Vollenhoven, after the new owner. Around 1900 it had become the largest brewery of the Netherlands with export to all continents of the world

Brouwerij vandeStreek

Brouwerij vandeStreek

VandeStreek is not just a name that’s made up for this craft brewery in Utrecht. It actually happens to be the last name of Sander and Ronald, two brothers in beer. Believe it or not, but this means literally ‘from the area, local’ in Dutch.

Brouwerij Het IJ

Brouwerij Het IJ

Amsterdam might have some major and well known beer producers, but craft brewery Brouwerij ’t IJ, founded in the mid-80s, was one of the first to brew well-crafted beers in Belgian style.
